Some love stories come full circle in the most beautiful ways. For Matthew & Cadence, Maymont Park has been a meaningful backdrop to their journey—from their engagement session to their first-anniversary photos. As a couple who adores nature, it felt only fitting to return to this timeless Richmond estate, surrounded by the towering magnolias and the elegance of the Italian Gardens.
Their session was a perfect blend of sentimentality and romance, made even more special by their choice to wear their wedding attire once more. Cadence slipped into her wedding dress, adding a personalized touch with her pearl-studded denim jacket embroidered with her new last name. Meanwhile, Matthew stood by her side in his wedding suit, a quiet nod to the day they promised forever to one another at Cedar Lane Farm just a year before.
The Beauty of Maymont Park for an Anniversary Session
Maymont Park offers a breathtaking variety of scenery, and we made the most of it during their session. We started near the magnolia trees, an intentional choice that held deep meaning for them. These trees played a role in their wedding design, making this spot the perfect place to reflect on their first year of marriage. The tree-lined paths created natural lead lines in their portraits, visually tying their love of nature into their gallery.
From there, we moved to the Italian Gardens, where the gazebo, stately columns, and delicate daffodils provided a dreamy, European-inspired aesthetic. These ended up being some of my favorite images from the session—soft, romantic, and effortlessly timeless.
Film Photography for a Romantic, Nostalgic Touch
For Matthew & Cadence’s anniversary session, I incorporated film photography to enhance the dreamy, nostalgic feel of their portraits. Film has a way of softening an image, rendering colors with a richness that feels both modern and timeless. Even though the weather had been overcast and rainy all week, the resulting images felt warm, joyful, and full of life—proof that love always shines through.
A Full-Circle Celebration
One of the sweetest parts of this session was simply watching Matthew & Cadence savor the moment together. Though early spring meant fewer blooms, the elegance of Maymont still provided a beautiful setting. The magnolia trees, with their rich green leaves, served as a sentimental nod to their wedding, and the architecture of the Italian Gardens added a romantic, timeless touch. As they walked hand in hand through the gardens, their joy and connection were unmistakable—a quiet, heartfelt celebration of their first year of marriage.
