A Backyard Wedding in Richmond VA That Felt Like Home
As a Richmond wedding photographer, I’m constantly reminded that the most meaningful celebrations aren’t always the most elaborate. Lauren and Mike’s backyard wedding in Richmond, VA was a beautiful example of how simplicity, intention, and connection can come together to create something unforgettable.
Their ceremony and reception took place in the groom’s sister’s backyard—a space already full of warmth. It was a setting that allowed them to be fully present, surrounded by the people they love most.
A Richmond Wedding Photographer’s Favorite Kind of Full-Circle Moment
Devon and I first connected with this sweet family when we photographed the groom’s sister’s elopement in 2023. So when Lauren and Mike reached out for their wedding day, it felt like reuniting with old friends.
One of my favorite parts of being a wedding photographer in Richmond is documenting these full-circle stories—watching love grow within a family and being invited back to preserve it again.
A Wedding Color Palette Inspired by Garden Florals
Lauren and Mike’s wedding embraced a soft, natural palette of sage green, blush, lavender, and dusty blue. Inspired by florals, the colors blended beautifully with the garden setting and added a quiet elegance to their day.
Decor was intentionally minimal. Bud vases filled with fresh blooms decorated the tables, and personalized mason jars served as place cards for each guest. These small touches made the entire space feel thoughtful and welcoming.
A Wedding Day That Felt Like a Summer Gathering
The mid-July weather was warm and partly cloudy—the perfect backdrop for a laid-back, outdoor reception. Lauren wore a lace, vintage-inspired Galina gown she found on Poshmark, and there was no wedding party—just the couple, their families, and close friends enjoying each other’s company.
The day felt more like a big family cookout than a formal reception. Guests mingled, laughed, and shared stories under string lights. The evening unfolded naturally—with food, dancing, and heartfelt moments around every corner.
Capturing Backyard Weddings with a Richmond Wedding Photographer’s Eye
As a Richmond wedding photographer, I love the pace of intimate weddings like this. There’s more time to breathe, more room for real emotion, and more space for quiet moments to unfold naturally.
To reflect the soft, nostalgic tone of the evening, I mixed digital photography with 35mm film. The entire evening was a joy to document. It was one of those wedding days where nothing felt rushed or forced—just pure, genuine celebration.
